How much does it cost to rent a backhoe loader

In Romania, a backhoe loader with operator is usually rented at an hourly rate for short jobs or at a daily rate for jobs lasting several days. The rate includes the operator and fuel, while transporting the machine to the site is invoiced separately, depending on the distance.

The rate for a backhoe loader is not a fixed number, which is why most companies write “price on request”. It is not a trick: the same machine can cost very different amounts depending on how long it stays, how far it travels and what it does there. Below we explain exactly what goes into the calculation, so you know what to ask when you request a quote.

The three ways to pay

By the hour. Used for short jobs — a few hours of digging, some loading, a clearance. There is a guaranteed minimum, usually 2–4 hours, because the machine has to be transported anyway.

By the day. The most common option. A day generally means 8 hours of actual work. If the job lasts several consecutive days, the daily rate goes down.

Per job. You do not pay for the machine, but for the result: “the excavation for the house foundation” or “the 200 m² platform”. It suits you when you know what you want but not how long it will take. The estimating risk passes to the contractor.

What is included in the rate and what is not

As a rule, the rental rate includes the operator and fuel. This is important to check, because a quote that looks lower may be without an operator, in which case you have to bring a qualified person yourself.

What is invoiced separately, almost always:

  • transport of the machine to the site and back, calculated by distance
  • materials, if the job needs ballast, crushed stone or sand
  • removal of soil or debris, if dump trucks are needed

Why prices differ so much

Four factors move the price more than anything else:

  1. Distance. A machine that travels 80 km to the site uses up half a day just on the road. That is why companies work within a radius, and beyond it the price rises noticeably.
  2. Duration. A single isolated day is the most expensive way to rent. Five consecutive days work out much cheaper per day, because the transport cost is spread out.
  3. Access. If the machine gets in with difficulty, if a fence has to be taken down or if the work is in a tight space, the duration increases.
  4. Soil type. Topsoil, wet clay or gravelly ground — they are not dug equally fast.

How to ask for a quote so you get a price, not an “it depends”

When you call, say straight away:

  • what the job is (foundation excavation, trench, levelling, loading)
  • the approximate dimensions — length, width, depth
  • the exact location
  • whether the machine has clear access or not
  • whether the soil stays on site or has to be removed

With this information, a serious company gives you a price the same day.

Backhoe loader or excavator?

For small jobs, the backhoe loader is usually the more economical choice: it digs with the rear arm and loads with the front bucket, so it does on its own what would otherwise take two machines. The tracked excavator becomes more advantageous for large volumes of soil, depths over 3 metres or soft ground, where tracks cope better than wheels.
