Asphalt, concrete or block paving: what to choose for your yard

Asphalt is the quickest to lay and the cheapest on large areas. Concrete stands up best to heavy traffic and fuel stains, but it cracks if the joints are wrong. Block paving costs the most in labour, but it can be repaired locally and allows later access to the utilities underneath.

All three solve the same problem — a surface you can drive on — but they behave very differently over time. The choice depends on the traffic, the area and the plans you have for the ground underneath.

Head-to-head comparison

Criterion Asphalt Concrete Block paving
Speed of construction highest medium, plus curing time lowest
Cost on large areas lowest medium highest
Heavy traffic good very good good, if laid correctly
Local repair patched difficult, it shows the blocks are lifted and relaid
Access to utilities underneath cut and reinstated broken up taken up and relaid
Appearance uniform, technical uniform, plain decorative, varied
Oil and fuel stains sensitive resistant the joints get stained
Heat in summer gets the hottest medium medium

When to choose asphalt

Large areas. From a few hundred square metres upwards, asphalt is clearly more advantageous in time and labour. The paver lays quickly, and the surface can be driven on the same day, after compaction and cooling.

Access roads and car parks. It is the standard solution, precisely because it goes down quickly and is easy to repair by patching.

Do not choose it for very small, narrow areas where the paver cannot get in, because laying by hand loses the speed advantage.

When to choose concrete

Heavy and stationary traffic. A platform where loaded trucks or machinery stand, a wash bay, the entrance to a hall — concrete copes better with long-term point loads.

Contact with fuel and oil. Diesel dissolves the bitumen in asphalt. For a technical area, concrete is the right choice.

Watch the joints. Concrete expands and contracts. Without joints cut in time and at the right spacing, it cracks randomly. It is the number one mistake with concrete platforms.

When to choose block paving

Access to utilities. If pipes or cables run under the surface and may need work, block paving is the only option that can be taken up and relaid without leaving a trace.

Small and decorative areas. Paths, entrances, house yards, where appearance matters as much as function.

Drainage. Paving lets water through the joints, so it reduces puddling — provided the layer beneath it drains.

It costs the most in labour, because it is laid piece by piece.

What is the same for all three

The foundation. Whatever you put on top, underneath the topsoil has to be stripped, the fill laid in layers and each layer compacted separately. A badly built foundation ruins asphalt, concrete and paving — just as quickly.

That is why, when you compare quotes, you should compare what is under the surface, not just the surface.

What we do

We carry out complete asphalt paving, from the earthworks to the final wearing course, with our own pavers and rollers. For concrete platforms and block paving, we carry out the ground preparation, the foundation and the compaction — the part that decides whether the work lasts.
