# Which machine fits into a small yard

Published: 2026-09-16

**In short:** For narrow yards, the skid steer loader offers the best balance between size and productivity: it gets through an access only a few metres wide and turns on the spot. The backhoe loader needs a wider access and room to manoeuvre, but it digs deeper and loads straight into a dump truck.

---

The most common wasted trip: the machine arrives at the address, it turns out it does not fit through the gate, and the client pays for the transport for nothing. It can be avoided with five minutes of checking beforehand.

## What to measure before ordering

1. **Width of the access** — the gate, the space between the house and the fence, any narrow point along the route. Measure the narrowest point, not the gate.
2. **Headroom** — cables, eaves, arches, gate frames.
3. **Room to manoeuvre** inside — the machine must be able to turn and get into position.
4. **Bearing capacity of the ground** — a heavy machine on thin paving or over a septic tank will break it.
5. **What is under the route** — manholes, covers, shallow buried utilities.

## Comparison by size

| Machine | What it does | Suitable for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Skid steer loader** | digs a little, loads, levels, demolishes with attachments | narrow yards, limited access, work between buildings |
| **Backhoe loader** | digs deep, loads into dump trucks, levels | yards with normal access, foundations, trenches |
| **Tracked excavator** | digs deep and a lot | open sites, where it is brought in on a trailer |

## The skid steer loader: champion of small spaces

It turns practically on the spot, gets through very narrow access and takes attachments: bucket, hydraulic breaker, planer, sweeper, forks. For a yard where you need to strip the surface, move soil, break up a slab and load the debris, it is the right machine.

**Its limitation:** it does not dig deep. It is not enough for a house foundation.

## The backhoe loader: if it fits, it is the most efficient

It digs with the rear arm and loads with the front bucket. If the access allows it, it does on its own a job that would otherwise take two machines.

**Its limitation:** it needs a wider access and room to get into position. The rear arm needs space behind the machine.

## When no machine fits

It happens: inner courtyards, accesses under 1.5 metres, land completely enclosed by buildings. Then the options are:

- **digging by hand**, with the soil taken out by wheelbarrow to an accessible point
- **temporarily removing** a section of fence, if possible
- **a small machine brought in another way**, if there is access from the back or from a neighbour's side, with their consent

In a situation like this, tell us from the start. It is better that we tell you it will be done by hand than send a machine that has to turn back.

## What we do

We have a Caterpillar 216B skid steer loader for tight spaces and backhoe loaders for jobs with normal access. If you send us two photos of the access — the gate and the route to where the work is — we will tell you in advance what fits and what does not.
