# Rent the machine or hand over the job as a turnkey project?

Published: 2026-09-16

**In short:** When you rent the machine, you pay for time and control the work, but you carry the risk if the job takes longer. With a turnkey project, you pay for a result, and the estimating risk passes to the contractor. Renting is more advantageous when you know exactly what needs doing and have someone to coordinate.

The same excavation can be contracted in two completely different ways. Many people choose out of habit, not according to what suits them. Here is the real difference.

## Head-to-head comparison

| Criterion | Equipment rental | Turnkey project |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What you pay for | machine time | the finished result |
| Who carries the duration risk | you | the contractor |
| Control over the work | direct, on the spot | through the agreed objective |
| Coordination | you need someone of your own | included |
| Materials | you source them separately | included in the quote |
| Cost predictability | variable | fixed, if the quote is firm |
| Suitable for | simple, clear jobs | jobs with several stages |

## Rental: you pay for time

It works very well when **you know exactly what needs doing** and someone on your side can coordinate: a builder who needs a machine for a few days, a company with its own site manager, an owner who supervises.

**The advantage:** you are in direct control. If you see that a little more needs digging on the left, it gets dug.

**The risk:** if the job takes longer than you estimated, you pay more. The estimate is yours.

**The usual trap:** the machine is ordered “for a few hours”, and the job needs a day. The machine leaves and comes back the next day, and the transport is paid twice.

## Turnkey project: you pay for a result

It works when the job **has several stages** and you do not want to coordinate them: excavation, fill, compaction, transport, paving. Each stage depends on another, and a machine waiting for another machine costs money.

**The advantage:** the firm quote. You know from the start how much it costs, and if the ground turns out harder than expected, that is not your concern.

**The risk:** if the quote is not clear about what it includes, disputes arise along the way. That is why you should always ask for the quote in writing, stating what is included and what is not.

## How to decide in three questions

1. **Do you know exactly what needs doing, down to the last detail?** If yes, renting is cheaper.
2. **Do you have someone who coordinates every day?** If not, go for a turnkey project.
3. **Does the job have more than two stages that depend on each other?** If yes, turnkey.

## When renting works out more expensive

When you rent machine after machine for a job with several phases. Each mobilisation is paid separately, and days are lost between stages. In the end you pay more than a turnkey quote would have cost — plus your own coordination time, which does not appear on any invoice.

## What we do

We do both, with the same machines and the same people. If you describe the job to us, we will tell you honestly which option suits you — including when the answer is “take the machine for a day and do it yourself, it is cheaper”.
